Chana dal barfi

A traditional Indian sweet recipe or a sweet fudge recipe mainly prepared with chana dal and sugar syrup. It is a common dry sweet recipe prepared especially during winter and or during festival like Diwali or Navratri.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cup bengal gram
  • 3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup clarified butter
  • 400gm milkmaid (condensed milk)
  • 1/4 cup coconut powder
  • Some chopped dry fruits
  • 1/2 tsp. Green cardamom powder
  • 2 tbsp. Clarified butter
  • Dry fruits for garnishing
  • Powder sugar for garnishing

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Wash the soaked chana dal properly
  2. Empty it in a pressure cooker
  3. Add 3 cups of milk to the pressure cooker and close its lid
  4. Cook for 15-20 minute on medium to low flame
  5. Then see if the lentil has cooked properly. Keep it aside to cool down
  6. After it cools, add it in mixer grinder with some milk and grind
  7. Grease the tin plate with butter
  8.  In a large pan heat 1/2 cup ghee
  9. After its heated add chana daal on a low flame
  10. Then roast chana dal on high flame
  11. Stir continuously for half an hour till the daal combines well without any lumps.
  12. Add 400gms milkmaid and mix it well
  13. Add ¼ cup coconut powder and chopped almonds and cashews
  14. Add ½ tsp cardamom powder
  15. Then add 2 tbsp. ghee
  16. Careful as the sugar syrup will be very hot.
  17. Now transfer the prepared dough into greased plate.
  18. Now top with few chopped cashews and press slightly.
  19. Allow to set for 30 minutes, or till it sets completely.
  20. Now unmould and cut into square pieces.
  21. Finally, serve the barfi or store in airtight container.
  22. Since no sugar was added you can add some sugar powder on the top (optional)

Some quick tips

  • Roast the dal mixture with ghee on low flame or else it might burn and taste bitter
  • Instead of milkmaid you can use sugar as per your taste
