This Chana Dal Pulao is an easy and nutritional rice based recipe prepared with white chickpeas or kabulichana and makes a great lunch box or tiffin box recipe for both kids and adults. It’s a great option as it is perfectly balanced one pot meal.


  • 2 Cup Basmati Rice
  • 4 Tbsp. Split Chickpeas (Chana Dal)
  • 2 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 Black Cardamom
  • 2 Mace (Javitri)
  • 1/2 Tsp. Whole Cumin
  • 4 Cloves
  • 1 Bay Leaves
  • 2 Tbsp. Salt
  • 1/2 Sliced Onion
  • 1/2 Cup Oil


  1. Soak 2 cup basmati rice and 4 tbspchana dal for half an hour
  2. Boil 4 cups of water, double that of rice
  3.  Add 1 bay leaf, 1 star anise, 5 cloves, 1 inch cinnamon, 2 Tbsp. Salt and 1 tsp jeerato boiling water till it turns aromatic.
  4. Take oil in a utensil and saute onion in it. Remove onion and add rice  to the oil.
  5. Add soaked daal to it.  Saute fir 1 mnt.
  6. Add the water boiled with spices to the soaked rice. Boil on high flame
  7. After the first boil, cover it with lid and cook on a medium flame for 8-10 mnts
  8. Cook for 1-2 mnt on low flame
  9. Cover with foil paper and steam for 5 mnts
  10. Put off the gas and leave it to steam for 10-15 mnts
  11.  Finally, serve it on a plate and garnish with onions

Some quick tips

  1. Firstly, using Basmati rice is optional, you can also prepare pulao recipe with sonamasuri rice.
  2. Also add chana masala powder to enhance the flavour of chickpea pulao
  3. Lastly, make sure to soak and boil chickpea well, else they will not be cooked in just 2 whistles..
